Amniotomy was performed in 12 multiparas at term but not in labor. In 6 of these patients (group I), the fetal head and cervix condition were favorable for amniotomy, and in the other 6 (group II), they were not favorable. In all group I patients, a sudden and progressive descent of the fetal head, and onset and progress of labor were noted within 5 hours. Plasma 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGFM) levels increased significantly (P less than 0.05) in 4 of these cases with time. In group II patients, descent of the head was less than that in group I patients (P less than 0.05), and neither strong labor nor rise of PGFM levels was noted within 5 hours. These data support our view that amniotomy at an appropriate time results in the onset and progress of labor, and the rise of plasma PGFM in virtue of the sudden and exponential increase of the head to cervix force, but amniotomy at an inappropriate time does not, because this force is unchanged. 相似文献

Summary To measure the degree of phr gene induction by DNA-damaging agents, the promoter region was fused to the coding region of the lacZ gene in plasmid pMC1403. The new plasmids were introduced into Escherichia coli cells having different repair capabilities. More efficient induction of phr gene expression was detected in a uvrA
– strain as compared with the wild-type strain. In addition, obvious induction was detected in uvrA
– cells treated by 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide and mitomycin C. Nalidixic acid, an inhibitor of DNA gyrase, also induced phr gene expression. In contrast, little induced gene expression was noted in UV-irradiated lexA
– and recA
– strains. It is suggested from these results that induction of the phr gene is one of the SOS responses. Possible nucleotide sequences which could be considered to constitute an SOS box were found at the regulator region of the phr gene.Abbreviations

Treatment of sickle red cells (SS homozygous) with a voltage pulse of less than 0.8 kV/cm and duration of 20 μs caused a change in the cell membrane, so as to facilitate the permeation of oxygen. The unsickling of the treated cells after a re-introduction of oxygen took place at a much faster rate. Neither leakages of Na+ and K+, nor a change in the cell volume occurred as the result of the low voltage pulsation. The effect of the voltage treatment persisted for hours at 25°C but disappeared rapidly at 37°C. The result suggests that a selective modification of membrane permeability may be achieved by the voltage pulsation technique. 相似文献

Induction and Secretion of Pathogenesis-Related Proteins by Salicylate or Plant Hormones in Tobacco Suspension Cultures 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Pathogenesis-related proteins (PR proteins), that are inducedin tobacco leaves in hypersensitive response to infection withtobacco mosaic virus (TMV) or by treatment with chemicals, werefound to be also inducible in a dedifferentiated system, tobaccosuspension culture. Quantitative determination of these proteinsusing anti PR 1a IgG showed that their increase started at aboutthe end of cell growth period and that their production couldbe enhanced by the addition of potassium salicylate, Eosin Yellowishand plant hormones (GA3, IAA and 2,4-D). The production dependedon the concentration of the chemical inducer and the cell lineused. In BY-2 cell line, PR proteins amounted to 12 µgat day 5 and then increased exponentially with time, reaching280 µg or 70 µg per g fr wt of cells at day 9 withor without the addition of 25 µM potassium salicylate.More than 90% of the induced PR proteins was found in the mediumand less than 10% in the cells at day 9. Peroxidase activityin the medium was constant throughout the experiment althoughtotal activity in the flask increased with cell growth, indicatingthat PR proteins are actively secreted into the medium. Egg predation by conspecific males of damselfishes,Pomacentrus nagasakiensis andChromis notatus notatus, was studied at Bohnotsu (31°15′ N, 131°15′ E) and Tsuyazaki (33°47′ N, 130°29′ E), respectively. InP. nagasakiensis, 7 egg-guarding males were removed from nests, and intrusion and egg predation by conspecific males took place in all of
the nests within an average time of 12.2 min. Frequency of attacks on eggs by other reef fishes during the period between
the removal of egg-guarding males and intrusion of conspecific males was lower than expected, considering the frequency of
aggressive displays of the egg-guarding males. The results of male removal experiments forChromis notatus notatus were almost the same, with intrusion and egg predation by conspecific males occurring in all 12 of the nests from which egg-guarding
males had been removed. SixP. nagasakiensis and 15C. notatus notatus which intruded into the nests and preyed on eggs were collected. All were males except for 1C. notatus notatus female. Results suggest that these males which intruded into vacant nests to eat eggs did not have clutches of their own
during the spawning bouts when the experiments were done. Results also showed that the intruding males were not inferior to
egg-guarding males in standard length, gonadosomatic index, and condition factor. It is clear that males which do not have
their own clutches during at least 1 spawning bout and prey on others' eggs when egg-guarding males disappear are common in
these 2 gregariously nesting damselfishes. It is discussed that conspecific eggs are potentially a good food source not only
for other species of reef fishes but also for conspecific males which do not have their own eggs during the spawning bouts.
The origin of males wich prey on eggs of other conspecifics is also considered. Some aspects of egg-guarding and aggressive

One of the family of voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCC), the N-type Ca2+ channel, is located predominantly in neurons and is associated with a variety of neuronal responses, including neurodegeneration. A precise mechanism for how the N-type Ca2+ channel plays a role in neurodegenerative disease, however, is unknown. In this study, we immunized N-type Ca2+ channel α1B-deficient (α1B−/−) mice and their wild type (WT) littermates with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein 35–55 and analyzed the progression of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). The neurological symptoms of EAE in the α1B−/− mice were less severe than in the WT mice. In conjunction with these results, sections of the spinal cord (SC) from α1B−/− mice revealed a reduction in both leukocytic infiltration and demyelination compared with WT mice. No differences were observed in the delayed-type hypersensitivity response, spleen cell proliferation, or cytokine production from splenocytes between the two genotypes. On the other hand, Western blot array analysis and RT-PCR revealed that a typical increase in the expression of MCP-1 in the SC showed a good correlation with the infiltration of leukocytes into the SC. Likewise, immunohistochemical analysis showed that the predominant source of MCP-1 was activated microglia. The cytokine-induced production of MCP-1 in primary cultured microglia from WT mice was significantly higher than that from α1B−/− mice and was significantly inhibited by a selective N-type Ca2+ channel antagonist, ω-conotoxin GVIA or a withdrawal of extracellular Ca2+. These results suggest that the N-type Ca2+ channel is involved in the pathogenesis of EAE at least in part by regulating MCP-1 production by microglia. 相似文献

High phosphate accumulating bacteria were isolated by autoradiography. One isoate, Arthrobacter globiformis PAB-6 accumulated phosphate intracellularly at 20% of dry cell mass in a simple synthetic medium. This amount was 3~7 times higher than type cultures examined. Almost no phosphate was released into the medium after cessation of growth. Fifty percent of total intracellular phosphate was fractionated as nucleic acids, while 20% each was recovered from cold PCA soluble fractions and polyphosphate fractions. The large content of nucleic acids in this bacterium appeared due to increased RNA content, specifically 4 S RNA fraction. 相似文献
